Privacy notice
Last updated 22 October 2026. Draft: to be reviewed by a solicitor before public launch.
This notice explains what personal data Leigh Life collects, why, and your rights under UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). We designed the game to collect as little as possible. The data controller is Leigh Life; contact hello@leighlife.co.uk.
What we collect
| Data | Why | Lawful basis | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your email address | To send sign-in codes and to contact you about your account | Contract | Until you delete your account |
| Your first name, year of birth, postcode and road, and that you accepted the terms (with the date) | To set up your character, put you in the right age league (Juniors under 13, Teens 13 to 17, Adults 18 to 64, Seniors 65+), keep under-13s on parent accounts, and, if you are 18 or over and choose to, show your first name and road (never your house number or postcode) to other players who tap you | Contract; consent for showing your road | Until you delete your account |
| Weekly round-up emails (if you tick the box) | To send a short weekly summary of your coins, badges and offers | Consent (you can unsubscribe from any email or in your account) | Until you unsubscribe or delete your account |
| Profiles: display name, chosen character, saved position, coins, items, stickers and play time | To save your game and, for child profiles, to apply the daily time limit you set | Contract | Until you delete the profile or account |
| Map reports you send (location in the map, category, your note) | To fix mistakes | Legitimate interests | Until fixed plus 2 years, or until you delete your account |
| Photos you add to a map report: the full-size original file as your phone saved it (which can include when and where it was taken), and, for adult players only, where your phone was and which way it was pointing when you took or picked the photo (only if your phone asks and you allow it) | To place the photo on the right building and keep the map accurate | Legitimate interests | Seen only by the Leigh Life team, never shown in the game. Kept as the record of how the street looked, until you delete your account (which deletes them) |
| Reports about other players, and moderation actions | To keep the game safe | Legitimate interests | Up to 2 years; bans are kept so they stick |
| Sign-in code requests (email, IP address, time) | To stop abuse | Legitimate interests | Removed after use or within 24 hours |
| Anonymous usage counts (pages viewed, which shops people stop at) and technical error reports | To improve the game | Legitimate interests | Counts are kept; error reports for 90 days |
For unique-visitor counts we combine your IP address and browser type with a secret that changes every day and keep only a scrambled result. We can't use it to identify you or follow you between days. We don't use advertising, tracking cookies, or third-party analytics.
Children
Children don't give us any data directly. A parent creates a child profile with a first name or nickname, a character and an optional time limit. Child profiles are never shown to other players and can't join multiplayer. We don't ask for a child's age, photo, school or location.
Other players
Other players see your first name, character and where you walk in the game. If you are 18 or over and leave "show my road" on, players who tap you also see the name of your road, for example "Elm Road". You can turn this off in your account at any time. Players under 18 never show a road. Nobody ever sees your email, postcode or house number.
Who processes data for us
Cloudflare hosts the game, its database and our email sending. Data may be processed outside the UK under appropriate safeguards (UK International Data Transfer Addendum).
Your rights
You can download your data (account menu → Download my data) and delete your account and all its profiles at any time (account menu → Delete my account). You can also ask us to access, correct, restrict or object to how we use your data by emailing us. If you're unhappy, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
